Cellophane, a sustainable material being manufactured and sold by Rengo Co., Ltd., is being used as packaging for disposable chopsticks at Kura Sushi Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan Store.
Cellophane is a transparent film made from wood pulp, and is expected to see greater use in a variety of applications as a material that is degraded into water and carbon dioxide by microorganisms naturally (in soil and ocean water). Kura Sushi Expo 2025 Osaka-Kansai store adopted cellophane as part of its commitment to sustainability. For example, the exterior walls of the store are made from approximately 336,000 recycled seashells that were scheduled to be discarded, as well as a non-artificial plaster that uses glue made from seaweed. Nihon Matai Co., Ltd. under the Rengo Group also saw the adoption of its disposable wet towel packaging using the environmentally friendly packaging series REBIOS, which was jointly developed with Rengo Co., Ltd.
* Packaged disposable chopsticks are used for take-out sushi.
