through our support
for Expo 2025.
The BLUE OCEAN DOME is a pavilion set up by the NPO ZERI JAPAN based on the theme "marine regeneration." The pavilion comprises three separate domes designed by Shigeru Ban.
In addition to highlighting issues affecting the world's oceans, including climate change and marine plastic pollution, the aim is to encourage changes in visitors' behavior. Dome A, which serves as the entrance, is made of bamboo, while Dome B and Dome C are made of carbon fiber and paper tubes. The themes for each of the domes are "circulation," "the ocean," and "wisdom". Dome C is a hub for researchers and companies addressing marine issues to communicate their messages to global visitors. Through our participation in the Blue Ocean Initiative, we are taking part in the organization of the BLUE OCEAN DOME to showcase our initiatives for the future of the world's oceans.
Protecting ocean environments with paper technologies
Between May 19 (Mon) and 25 (Sun), we will host a corporate exhibit titled Rengo Week at Dome C of the BLUE OCEAN DOME. Through visuals and wall displays, we will showcase our initiatives for sustainability in three areas—land, sea, and air—centered on our unprecedented technologies and research in the corrugated board industry and in paper. Moreover, while seeing glimpses of the future, visitors will also be able to see visuals relating to our "blue action" initiatives, including our kelp forest regeneration activities using biodegradable cellophane and demonstrations of corrugated cardboard in place of polystyrene for fish boxes. The packaging for the exhibits and distributed materials make use of corrugated board and other paper products, showcasing the ingenuity of the Rengo Group. We look forward to seeing you there.

A dome supported by corrugated board?
The theme for Dome C is "wisdom." We will set up an exhibit in one area of the dome that is dedicated to permanent exhibits from participating companies. With a huge, eye-catching corrugated box as the display, we introduce the paper tubing materials that are supporting the structure of Dome C, as well as our kelp forest regeneration activities using biodegradable cellophane. The Big Box would be a great phot spot—don't miss it.

This is a permanent exhibit, excluding for the duration of Rengo Week in May

Recycled materials are everywhere in the dome!
The main structural material in Dome C is paper tubes, and Rengo manufactured and provided the paper for this paper tubes, which is called tube board. Additionally, Rengo Group products are used throughout the facility, including a building material made from compressed waste paper that is used for the flooring and decorative panels of the cafe counter. The paper tubes used in the dome structure must be suitably thick and have a sufficient level of hardness and strength. Consequently, a special reinforced tube board was selected, which has much greater strength than conventional types. While the main material is waste paper, our proprietary technology enabled to create a thinner and lighter material than conventional tube board with the same level of strength. When it becomes paper tubes, they are both strong and lightweight, ensuring that the paper tubes can thoroughly support the structure of Dome C.
*Rengo holds the top share of the tube board market and produces approximately 76,000 tons each year. Tube board is a recyclable material that can be recycled in the same way as corrugated board.

Finding solutions to loss of seaweed beds, an issue facing the world's oceans
Expo 2025 organizers are also hosting a virtual expo that recreates the expo venue online. "Visitors" can experience the atmosphere of the expo with an avatar, visiting reproductions of actual pavilions and event facilities while enjoying the unique experience that virtual exhibits and events can provide.
We have set up a Rengo booth at the virtual BLUE OCEAN DOME, and plan to animate all our initiatives in line with the virtual experience, including videos showing a seabed symposium, for example.
The virtual events are free for everyone to attend from anywhere in the world, 24 hours a day, via the smartphone or computer app. We look forward to your visit.
Developing materials for the fisheries industry that don't end up as marine waste
To mark our participation in the Blue Ocean Initiative in 2023, we set up the Rengo Blue Action Team and have since engaged in the relevant activities. Aiming to develop and promote the spread of materials that don't end up as marine waste, we are engaged in various initiatives to address issues facing the marine and fisheries industries, including land-based aquaculture, corrugated marine product packaging development, and seaweed bed restoration. While visitors can learn more about the Rengo Blue Action Team's activities through the pavilion and virtual expo, we will also be uploading videos to this website that cover everything from activity concepts to development themes.
Supporting the expo with corrugated board products
Following a call for operational support from the Japan Association for the 2025 World Exposition, we provided 630 sets of beds and partitions made of fire-retardant corrugated board, as well as our Rakuppa Display, an easy to assemble and disassemble paper-based display stand that can be reused. The beds are for those requiring special support in the event of a disaster during the Expo. Staff from the Expo's crisis management department have undergone disaster preparedness training during which they learned how to assemble the corrugated board beds, for instance.
The Rengo Group's support for Expo 2025
We are operating specially designed trucks in the Kansai, Kanto, and Tokai areas. The logistics trucks transporting the Rengo Group's paperboard, corrugated board, and other products have been printed with the logos of the Expo and the Rengo Group. You might find them near the Expo venue!
