Rengo Co., Ltd. (Head Office: Kita-ku, Osaka; Chairman, President & CEO: Kiyoshi Otsubo) announces that it has won the Minister of the Environment Award at the 26th Global Environment Awards (sponsor: Fujisankei Communications Group, supported by: Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, Ministry of the Environment, Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Keidanren).

The Global Environment Awards were established in 1992 as a system for honoring those in industrial circles with the aim of “symbiosis of industrial development and the global environment.” These awards are said to be one of the most authoritative in the environmental field.

Rengo received this award due to its highly evaluated initiatives for “solving environmental and social issues by reducing CO2 emissions through both structural and institutional measures, as well as creating packaging.”

With the key concept of “Less is more,” Rengo will continue to attempt to create greater values with fewer resources and to make packaging that is friendly to both people and the environment so as to enhance its environmental initiatives.

    Award Outline

“Solving environmental and social issues by reducing CO2 emissions through both structural and institutional measures, as well as creating packaging.”

Sustainable production and innovative packaging development has been promoted with the aim of solving environmental and social issues with the key concept of “Less is more.” At the Yashio Mill, which is the largest paperboard mill in Japan, created a task team called “Teinenpi (Fuel-Efficient) Yashio” to reduce CO2 emissions with the enforcement of Saitama Prefecture cap and trade type emission trading program. Furthermore, the company has constructed a framework for implementing and evaluating energy saving activities. Rengo is promoting a shift to CO2 emission reductions as part of institutional measures. In structural measures, it introduced woodchip biomass boiler power generation equipment in January 2016, thereby reducing its CO2 emissions by approximately 65,000 tons annually.
Rengo has received FSC® certification at all paperboard, corrugated box and folding carton plants, and has established a supply system for FSC-certified corrugated board and boxes and folding cartons ahead of the competition.
